Shark Attack in Egypt’s Red Sea Coast Kills One Tourist, Injures Another
A tragic shark attack off Egypt’s Red Sea coast has resulted in the death of one tourist and the injury of another, according to the country’s environment ministry. The incident occurred in the northern Marsa Alam area, a popular tourist destination for divers.
The Egyptian Ministry of Environment confirmed that two foreign tourists were attacked by a shark, leading to one fatality and one injury. The injured tourist was immediately transported to a hospital in Port Ghalib, located about 50 kilometers (30 miles) north of Marsa Alam. The nationalities of the victims have not been disclosed by the authorities.
In response to the attack, the area was closed to swimmers for two days. Authorities clarified that the incident occurred in “deep waters outside the designated swimming area,” suggesting that the attack took place beyond the safe zones for tourists.

Impact on Red Sea Tourism
The Red Sea remains a major tourist attraction in Egypt, known for its vibrant marine life, making it a hotspot for divers. It plays an essential role in Egypt’s economy, contributing to employment and foreign currency, particularly significant as the country faces its worst economic crisis.
However, this shark attack adds to the growing concerns about safety in the region. Just last month, a dive boat accident in the same area killed at least four people. This follows a June 2023 shark attack in Hurghada, which claimed the life of a Russian tourist.
Environmental Concerns
Marine experts attribute the increasing frequency of shark attacks to factors such as unregulated construction, over-fishing, and irresponsible tourism practices in the region. These activities are believed to disrupt the local ecosystem and influence shark behavior, contributing to the heightened risks for tourists.
As Egypt grapples with both economic challenges and concerns over tourism safety, the authorities are under pressure to manage the delicate balance between attracting visitors and ensuring their safety in the region.
