Romania has condemned Russia after a drone allegedly violated its airspace during an attack on neighboring Ukraine. The incident has sparked fresh concerns for NATO security in Eastern Europe.
The Ministry of National Defense said the drone entered Romanian airspace on Saturday at 6:05 p.m. local time. It stayed for nearly 50 minutes before leaving the northern Dobruja region and returning toward Ukraine.
Two Romanian F-16 fighter jets were on patrol at the time. They intercepted the drone and tracked it visually and by radar. The pilots were given clearance to shoot it down. However, they decided against it to prevent possible collateral damage.
Romania described the act as “irresponsible” and said it posed a direct threat to citizens and regional security. The ministry also stressed that the violation broke international law and challenged NATO’s collective security in the Black Sea region.
In response, Romania summoned Russian Ambassador Vladimir Lipaev. He dismissed the accusation and called it a provocation by Ukraine, according to Russian media reports.
European leaders also reacted strongly. EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas labeled the drone’s presence “an unacceptable breach of an EU member state’s sovereignty.” She declared support for Romania and warned that repeated violations could destabilize Europe.
The event comes just days after Poland reported shooting down Russian drones that crossed its airspace. NATO members have since increased vigilance and strengthened defenses on the alliance’s eastern borders.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky confirmed the drone traveled nearly 10 kilometers inside Romania. He urged the international community to take stronger action against Moscow, including tougher sanctions.
This latest violation highlights the rising tension between Russia and NATO states. Romania’s protest signals that regional security risks are growing as drone incursions continue.
