The Provincial Disaster Management Authority has issued a province-wide Heatwave Alert for Punjab. The warning comes as temperatures are expected to rise sharply in the coming weeks.
Officials said southern districts will face the most severe conditions. In some areas, temperatures may reach up to 52°C during peak heat periods.
The authority confirmed that May and June are likely to be the hottest months. Normal temperatures in Punjab are expected between 43°C and 45°C.
During intense heatwave spells, conditions may become even more extreme. Officials noted that temperatures are already 2–4°C above normal levels.
This indicates an early start to harsh summer conditions across the province. The situation has raised concerns for public safety and health.
A mild Heatwave Alert is expected to affect southern Punjab from April 29 to May 3. During this period, heat levels may increase further in low-lying areas.
Upper Punjab may receive temporary relief due to a westerly weather system. This system is expected between April 27–29 and again from May 3–5.
It may reduce temperatures by 2–4°C in some regions. However, relief is expected to be short-lived.
Despite this, southern Punjab remains highly vulnerable to extreme heat. The region has historically recorded higher temperature peaks in summer.
The Provincial Disaster Management Authority Punjab has urged citizens to take precautionary steps. People are advised to avoid direct sunlight during peak hours.
The authority also recommended increased water intake. This is important to prevent dehydration and heat-related illnesses.
Farmers have been advised to adjust their work schedules. They should also protect crops and livestock from heat stress.
All government departments have been placed on high alert under the Heatwave Alert. Emergency centers will remain staffed around the clock.
Rescue 1122 and other emergency services have also been put on standby. Authorities aim to respond quickly to any heat-related emergencies.
The Pakistan Meteorological Department said hot and dry conditions will continue due to continental air.
However, isolated rain and dust storms may occur in some parts of Punjab. These events may provide brief and limited relief.
