The government of Punjab has approved the establishment of a dedicated Internal Affairs Wing within the Punjab Enforcement and Regulatory Authority (Punjab Enforcement and Regulatory Authority), also known as PERA.
The decision was taken on the directions of Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz. It comes after complaints of corruption, misuse of power, and administrative issues within the authority.
Officials said the new step will strengthen monitoring and improve internal accountability in Punjab institutions.
New Monitoring and Vigilance System
The Internal Affairs Wing will work as a vigilance and intelligence unit. It will monitor the performance and conduct of PERA officers across Punjab.
The unit will be based in Lahore. Authorities expect it to become functional within two months.
Around 200 officers will be hired on a contractual basis. These officers will be deployed across all 36 districts of Punjab.
The goal is to improve oversight and ensure better discipline in field operations.
Recruitment from Security Agencies
Senior officials said the government plans to recruit experienced professionals for the new wing. These officers will come from multiple security and intelligence agencies.
These include Military Intelligence, Inter-Services Intelligence, Intelligence Bureau, and Special Branch. Officials from Customs Intelligence may also be included.
Authorities believe this will help improve accountability systems across Punjab. It is also expected to reduce internal misconduct.
Staffing Changes and Transfers
Sources said nearly 4,000 Punjab Police personnel were initially deputed to PERA. However, around 400 officers have already been sent back.
The transfers were made due to allegations of corruption and misconduct in some cases.
The government is reviewing staffing arrangements to improve overall efficiency in Punjab enforcement operations.
Move Toward Permanent Workforce
Officials also confirmed a long-term plan to reduce reliance on deputation staff. PERA will gradually build its own permanent enforcement workforce.
This shift aims to create a more stable and professional system in Punjab.
Authorities say this will improve performance and reduce administrative confusion in the future.
Focus on Transparency and Reform
The Internal Affairs Wing is expected to improve transparency within PERA. It will also help strengthen public trust in enforcement agencies across Punjab.
