MPs Shocked As PML-N Learned Of 27th Amendment Via X Post

In a startling development, ruling party MPs learned about the proposed 27th Constitutional Amendment only after Bilawal Bhutto Zardari publicly revealed key details in a post on X, raising questions about communication inside the coalition. The amendment is being pushed by Pakistan Muslim League‑Nawaz (PML-N) and includes wide-ranging changes, including setting up a constitutional court, restoring executive magistrates and transferring judges.

According to Bilawal’s post, a PML-N delegation led by Shehbaz Sharif met with him and Asif Ali Zardari, seeking support for the amendment. He said the proposal also targets protections for provincial shares in the National Finance Commission Award and suggests amending Article 243 of the Constitution, which deals with armed forces command.

Insiders say the revelation via social media surprised several PML-N lawmakers, who claim they were neither briefed nor consulted before the public disclosure. One MP commented off record: “We learnt through a tweet that our party is backing a major constitutional change.” The disclosure has stirred unrest among coalition ranks.

The government’s official stance is that deliberations on the amendment are ongoing and no final draft has been presented yet. Even the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) has called for consensus before moving ahead. However, with the X post having already surfaced, the debate has rapidly shifted from draft to disclosure.

Some legal analysts warn the amendment could significantly alter federal-provincial dynamics, weaken judicial independence and affect regional power sharing. Attention is now on whether the PPP will lend support an alignment that could determine whether the 27th Amendment clears parliament.
