The Pakistan Medical and Dental Council (PMDC) has approved an increase of 475 MBBS seats in Punjab’s government medical colleges, providing more opportunities for aspiring medical students from the upcoming academic session.
With the latest approval, the total number of MBBS seats in Punjab’s public sector medical colleges has increased from 3,476 to 3,951. The overall intake capacity across the province’s government medical and dental colleges has also risen to 4,241 seats, marking a significant expansion in medical education.
The decision comes after the Punjab Health Department repeatedly urged the PMDC to resolve the long-pending matter before the start of the new academic year. Officials had expressed concerns that delays in approving the additional seats could affect admissions and limit opportunities for deserving students.
According to official documents, the Punjab government initially submitted a formal request to the PMDC on August 21, 2025, seeking approval for 475 additional MBBS seats in government medical colleges. The proposal remained under review for several months before being placed before the PMDC Council for final consideration.
Following detailed deliberations, the council approved the increase, allowing public medical colleges across Punjab to admit students under the expanded quota from the upcoming academic session.
The increase is expected to help accommodate the growing number of students competing for admission to government medical colleges each year. It also reflects the provincial government’s efforts to strengthen the healthcare education system by expanding access to quality medical training.
Education and health officials believe the additional seats will contribute to producing more qualified doctors, helping address the country’s increasing healthcare needs in the coming years.
Students applying for MBBS admissions in Punjab are advised to monitor official announcements from the PMDC and the University of Health Sciences (UHS) regarding the updated admission schedule, eligibility criteria, and merit lists.
The expansion is being viewed as a positive step toward improving medical education capacity while creating greater opportunities for talented students pursuing careers in medicine.
