American swimmer Bobby Finke set a new world record in the men’s 1,500 meters freestyle, clocking 14 minutes, 30.67 seconds and securing gold at the Paris Olympics. He broke Sun Yang’s 12-year-old record of 14:31.02 from the London Games.

Finke’s performance saw him lead from start to finish, outpacing Italy’s Gregorio Paltrinieri, who took silver, and Ireland’s Daniel Wiffen, who won bronze. This victory marked Finke as the first male swimmer to win consecutive golds in this event since Australia’s Grant Hackett (2000-04) and the first American to do so since Mike Burton (1968-72).
The win brought the U.S. their seventh gold of the meet, pushing them ahead of Australia in the medal standings. With two events remaining, Australia needs at least one gold in the medley relays and hopes the U.S. will not add more to their tally.
