Pakistan's T20 World Cup Exit Sparks Backlash and Match-Fixing Allegations

Pakistan’s disappointing exit from the T20 World Cup 2024, following losses to the USA and India, has sparked significant backlash from fans and former players. Despite victories against Canada and Ireland, the team’s failure to progress beyond the first round has led to widespread criticism and allegations of match-fixing.

Fans are particularly frustrated by the unexpected defeat to the inexperienced host team, the USA, and a loss against India despite being in a strong position. The criticism has been severe on social media, with many expressing their disappointment and anger.

Former cricketers have not held back in their condemnation, highlighting what they see as a lack of performance and preparation. The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) anticipated the backlash but is now also dealing with allegations of match-fixing, which have been discussed by some YouTubers, journalists, and highlighted in Indian media.

Team sources have denied any involvement in match-fixing, pointing out that ICC anti-corruption officials and the team’s security manager closely monitored the players throughout the tournament. Key players such as Babar Azam, Shaheen Afridi, Mohammad Rizwan, and Shadab Khan have never been involved in any negative activities, according to the team.

PCB sources have stated that while constructive criticism is acceptable, baseless allegations of match-fixing are not. The board does not see any grounds for an internal investigation, instead, they challenge those making the allegations to provide evidence. The PCB has instructed its legal department to issue notices demanding proof from the accusers and is prepared to seek defamation compensation if no evidence is provided.

Additionally, an incident involving Haris Rauf has heightened concerns about player security. The players fear facing hostile behavior when out in public, especially with their families. This fear has made some, including captain Babar Azam, hesitant to return to Pakistan immediately. The PCB has assured the team of complete protection and urged players to report any security concerns promptly.

The hostile environment created by social media, certain TV experts, and YouTubers has contributed to the players’ reluctance to go out, further complicating the situation. The PCB’s commitment to addressing the security concerns and protecting its players remains firm, as they navigate this challenging period.
