OpenAI Launches GitHub Connector for ChatGPT to Enhance Codebase Research

OpenAI has introduced a new GitHub connector for its ChatGPT deep research tool, aimed at helping developers interact directly with codebases and engineering documents within GitHub repositories. The feature, which is currently in beta, is available to ChatGPT Plus, Pro, and Team users, with plans to extend support to Enterprise and Education tiers soon.

This connector marks the first official integration for ChatGPT’s deep research tool, which is designed to generate comprehensive reports on both technical and non-technical topics. With the GitHub integration, developers can break down product specifications into tasks, analyze code structure and patterns, and understand API implementations using real code.

Nate Gonzalez, Head of Business Products at OpenAI, explained that the new feature is a direct response to user demand for easier access to internal data. He also emphasized that while the tool may still “hallucinate” answers, it is intended to be a time-saving assistant, not a replacement for expert review.

The GitHub connector respects repository permission settings to safeguard sensitive data, only accessing content explicitly shared with ChatGPT. This launch comes alongside other investments by OpenAI in developer tooling, including the release of Codex CLI, improvements to the ChatGPT desktop app, and ongoing developments in AI-assisted coding tools.
