Former Pakistan fast bowler Mohammad Amir is reportedly considering entering the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2027 auction. He may register as a British player following his acquisition of UK citizenship.
The 34-year-old left-arm pacer is expected to register for the upcoming IPL auction. The auction is scheduled to take place in Goa on December 16. However, his participation has not yet been officially confirmed.
The development follows Amir’s registration for the Afghanistan Premier League (APL) draft as a British national. The draft is scheduled for November 3 in Dubai.
According to the APL draft register, Amir has been listed as a British national. However, Pakistan is mentioned as his country of residence. He has been placed in the Platinum category, which carries a player fee of $100,000.
Amir currently lives in England and has participated in several English domestic cricket competitions. These include the T20 Blast and The Hundred, where he has played as a local player.
His British citizenship could potentially open the door to IPL participation. Pakistani nationals have faced restrictions on playing in the Indian league in recent years.
How British Citizenship Could Help Mohammad Amir Join IPL
Mohammad Amir’s reported interest in the IPL follows a similar route taken by former Pakistan all-rounder Azhar Mahmood.
Mahmood obtained a British passport and subsequently played in the IPL. He represented Kings XI Punjab and Kolkata Knight Riders between 2012 and 2015.
His participation came despite restrictions affecting Pakistani players in the tournament.
Amir’s registration as a British national for the APL draft could also have implications for his international cricket commitments. Reports suggest this status may allow him to participate without obtaining a No-Objection Certificate (NOC) from the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB).
However, his eligibility for the IPL auction and any potential participation remain subject to the relevant regulations.
Pakistani Players Register for Afghanistan Premier League Draft
Meanwhile, more than 30 Pakistani cricketers have registered for the upcoming APL draft.
The list reportedly includes several prominent names. These include Fakhar Zaman, Saim Ayub, Hasan Ali, Shan Masood, Abdullah Shafique, Faheem Ashraf, and Imad Wasim.
However, their participation remains uncertain because of diplomatic tensions between Pakistan and Afghanistan.
Reports indicate that the PCB is unlikely to issue NOCs for Pakistani players. The Afghanistan Cricket Board has also stated that Pakistani cricketers must obtain clearance from the PCB.
This situation could affect the participation of several registered players in the tournament.
Mohammad Amir’s International Cricket Career
Mohammad Amir has represented Pakistan across all three international formats. His international career includes 36 Test matches, 61 One-Day Internationals, and 62 T20 Internationals.
He last represented Pakistan during the 2024 ICC T20 World Cup. His final appearance came against Ireland in Lauderhill, Florida.
The left-arm fast bowler remains a recognized name in international cricket. His possible entry into the IPL 2027 auction has attracted attention.
