A Rawalpindi anti-terrorism court has rejected the bail applications of Omar Ayub, the Opposition Leader in Pakistan, in 14 protest-related cases. The court also ordered his immediate arrest and production before the court. The decision came after Ayub and his lawyer failed to attend multiple hearings, which delayed the judicial process.
The cases stem from the violent protests that erupted in Rawalpindi and Attock on November 24 and 26 last year. These protests were organized by Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) supporters demanding the release of former Prime Minister Imran Khan. The protests escalated into clashes with security forces, leading to several injuries and arrests.
Judge Amjad Ali Shah issued the order, stating that the repeated absences of Omar Ayub and his legal counsel had hindered the court’s ability to proceed with the cases. The court expressed concern over the delay in the proceedings and emphasized the need for Ayub’s presence to ensure that justice is served.
Omar Ayub, who is currently the Secretary General and parliamentary leader of PTI, is facing multiple charges related to the protests. Police registered several FIRs against PTI leaders and workers, including Ayub. The court’s decision to reject his bail and issue an arrest order is seen as a significant development in the ongoing legal challenges facing PTI.
This ruling adds to the pressure on PTI leadership, as several key figures face legal actions connected to the protests. The rejection of Omar Ayub’s bail is expected to further escalate tensions between PTI and the ruling government, leading to potential political ramifications in the coming weeks.
