Addressing a select gathering in Naudero House to commemorate his grandfather and PPP founder Zulfikar Ali Bhutto’s 44th death anniversary, the foreign minister stated that previous elections brought Imran Khan to power through rigging, but they would not allow the electoral process to be sabotaged this time.

He stated that the coalition partners in the Centre were aware of the game being played with the nation’s future and reiterated the demand for a larger Supreme Court bench. Mr Bhutto-Zardari expressed concern that the battle for Takht-i-Lahore (the Lahore throne) would sink the country.

Recalling his father Asif Ali Zardari’s reference to the judicial murder of Zulfikar Ali Bhutto, he said it was still pending before the Supreme Court, but the Constitution framed by his grandfather was repeatedly violated.

He traced the history of illegitimate steps that were given legal cover by the judiciary, claiming that both General Zia and General Musharraf’s coups were declared legitimate, while his mother Benazir Bhutto’s democratic government was barely allowed to function and lasted only 11 months. Again, her government was dismissed in 1996, and the judiciary did nothing to restore it.

He also mentioned Murtaza Bhutto’s murder, saying it was ironic that they were held as suspects despite the fact that the crime was committed against his family.

He recalled that former Chief Justice Iftikhar Chaudhry was one of the judges who legitimised Musharraf’s takeover and claimed that the same judge removed a democratically elected Prime Minister, Yousaf Raza Gilani, for allegedly violating the Constitution. He claimed that judicial dictatorship was born under Iftikhar Chaudhry and that it still exists today as a “one-man show.”[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]
