Mehfooz Shaheed Canal Set to Drive Agricultural Revolution in South Punjab

Punjab Assembly members have lauded the Mehfooz Shaheed Canal as a transformative project that will convert barren lands in Cholistan into fertile agricultural fields under the Green Pakistan Initiative.

Key Highlights of the Project:

  • Water Source: The canal originates from the Sutlej River.
  • Agricultural Growth: It aims to optimize water resources and boost productivity in South Punjab.
  • Economic Benefits: The initiative will reduce agricultural imports and create job opportunities for around 150,000 people in Cholistan.
  • Strategic Importance: It will help counter India’s water aggression by efficiently utilizing water resources.

Punjab MPA Wasif Mazhar Raan dismissed misinformation about the project and highlighted its long-term benefits. MPA Mian Kamran Abdullah Madal emphasized that similar canal projects should be launched in Balochistan to ensure sustainable agriculture.

Meanwhile, PTI MNA Mian Ghaus Muhammad stressed the urgent need for irrigation projects, noting that despite being an agricultural country, Pakistan still imports wheat, sugar, and rice.

Lawmakers have urged the government to expand similar projects across Sindh and Balochistan to secure Pakistan’s agricultural future.
