[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text dp_text_size=”size-4″]NEW YORK  — A source familiar with the burger chain’s thinking said on Monday that the number of corporate employees McDonald’s Corp plans to lay off this week will be in the “hundreds,” as the company moves forward with a previously announced restructuring.

According to the source, who was not authorised to speak to the media, the fast-food company is closing its offices “out of respect” and to “provide dignity, confidentiality, and comfort to our colleagues.”

“It used to be that people would be called into a conference room with the windows papered over, then have to walk back to their desk to collect their personal belongings and leave with their head down,” said the source.

According to the source, McDonald’s will have more employees starting new jobs or getting promotions this week than being laid off. The company known for its Golden Arches employs over 150,000 people worldwide, with roughly 70% based outside of the United States, including in company-owned restaurants.

The layoffs do not include the over 2 million employees who work in franchised McDonald’s restaurants around the world.

McDonald’s, based in Chicago, did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

McDonald’s announced in January that as part of an updated business strategy, it would review corporate staffing levels, which could result in layoffs in some areas and expansion in others.

McDonald’s plans to build new restaurants as part of its strategy update. It has raised menu prices in the last year as commodity and labour costs have risen.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]
