Kylian Mbappe delivered another memorable performance as France defeated Sweden 3-0 at MetLife Stadium, helping his team advance in the FIFA World Cup. The French captain scored twice and made history by becoming the player with the most goals in World Cup knockout matches.
The victory was France’s biggest knockout-stage win since its famous 3-0 triumph over Brazil in the 1998 FIFA World Cup final. The result also saw France set another remarkable record, becoming the first nation in World Cup history to score three or more goals in five consecutive matches.
After the match, Kylian Mbappe praised the team effort rather than focusing on his individual achievement. Speaking through a translator, he said he understands his responsibilities but believes success comes from the entire squad. He also admitted France started the match cautiously and felt the team could have performed even better during the opening stages.
France created several scoring opportunities in the first half but struggled to convert them. Both Kylian Mbappe and Michael Olise struck the woodwork before the breakthrough finally arrived in the 45th minute. Mbappe calmly finished to give France a deserved lead just before halftime.
The goal carried extra significance as it became Kylian Mbappe’s ninth in World Cup knockout matches. That achievement moved him ahead of Brazilian legends Leônidas and Ronaldo, making him the highest scorer in the tournament’s knockout history.
Mbappe doubled France’s advantage in the 74th minute after making a perfectly timed run onto a brilliant through ball from Michael Olise. The Real Madrid forward curled a composed finish past Sweden goalkeeper Viktor Zetterstrom, with the goal closely resembling his first strike of the evening.
His brace also brought Kylian Mbappe level with Lionel Messi on six goals in the current FIFA World Cup, keeping the race for the Golden Boot wide open. Overall, Mbappe now has 18 goals in just 18 World Cup appearances, leaving him only one goal behind Messi on the competition’s all-time scoring list, despite the Argentine captain having played significantly more matches.
France will now turn their attention to the Round of 16, where they are scheduled to face Paraguay at Philadelphia Stadium on Saturday, July 4. With Kylian Mbappe in outstanding form, France will be confident of continuing their impressive World Cup campaign.
