Kylian Mbappe drops a contract bombshell on PSG, and the French club might sell forward immediately after receiving his legal letter.

PSG is considering selling Kylian Mbappe this summer after he informed them that he will not exercise his 2025 contract option.

Mbappe’s contract with PSG expires in 2024.

The player will not use the 2025 option.

This summer, PSG could sell him.

WHAT OCCURED? Mbappe might be available for free transfer in a year, which PSG is anxious to avoid. Real Madrid is considering such a transfer, but L’Equipe reports that PSG would be loath to allow Mbappe depart as a free agent, implying that he could be sold this summer.

The 23-year-old had already committed to the capital club for the following season, despite growing interest from Spanish heavyweights Real Madrid. However, the option to extend his contract by another year – until 2025 – will not be used due to the French forward’s personal wishes, as stated in a written letter addressed to the club on Monday. PSG will be seeking for at least a partial return on their initial investment after paying €180 million (£155 million/$194 million) for Mbappe in 2018.

The news is extremely important for Real Madrid. The 14-time European Champions only bid goodbye to experienced forward Karim Benzema a week ago, when the attacker decided to leave Real Madrid after 14 years to join Saudi Arabia. Los Blancos are looking for a forward and have already contacted Chelsea about the availability of Kai Havertz, but the potential to sign their top target as early as this summer may be too good to pass up.

PSG’s attitude is straightforward: either Mbappe activates the year extension, gets a new contract, or is sold, as they apparently have no intention of letting him depart for free. Meanwhile, Real Madrid may have to pay a premium for the French international, despite the fact that he only has one year left on his contract. Weeks of tough negotiations appear to be in the horizon.
