KP To Experience Transgender Candidate In Elections 2024

In a noteworthy development, Pakistan is witnessing progress in its electoral landscape, with individuals from diverse backgrounds stepping forward to participate and represent their communities. Following the 2018 general elections, another significant step towards inclusivity is observed, as a transgender individual from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) is gearing up to contest in the upcoming polls, slated for February 8 next year.

Sobia Khan, a resident of Peshawar, filed nomination papers for the provincial assembly seat from constituency PK-81. Running as an independent candidate, Khan aims to champion the rights of the marginalized transgender community, women, and children if she secures victory in the elections.

In her media statements after submitting the nomination, Khan expressed her determination to advocate for transgender rights and challenge societal norms that undermine their potential contributions to society. With a Bachelor’s degree, Khan also holds the distinction of being the first transgender radio jockey in the province.

The general elections are scheduled for February 8, 2024, across the country as mandated by the Supreme Court. This move towards greater inclusivity echoes the 2018 election, where a transgender individual named Maria contested from Mansehra, KP, as an independent candidate, securing 536 votes—a noteworthy achievement surpassing some women candidates in the elections.
