In a major effort to enhance food safety, the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government has launched a significant initiative to crack down on the sale of donkey meat falsely labeled as halal.

The KP Food Safety & Halal Food Authority has set up an advanced laboratory that can quickly verify the authenticity and quality of meat. This high-tech facility uses scientific testing to ensure food meets halal and safety standards.

Run by the Food Safety Authority, the lab examines samples of milk, water, spices, drinks, and especially meat—identifying whether it comes from a donkey, cow, or buffalo.

Outfitted with state-of-the-art equipment like FTIR, HPLC, and UHPLC machines that adhere to international testing standards, the lab is equipped to deliver fast and accurate results.

Officials say the lab will significantly improve food monitoring, detect low-quality or unsafe products, and help maintain public health through timely identification of food fraud.
