KBC Receives Backlash For Featuring Women From Armed Forces As Guests

Popular quiz show Kaun Banega Crorepati (KBC) is facing criticism after airing a special Independence Day promo. The episode features three women officers from India’s armed forces. They appeared in uniform and spoke about Operation Sindoor, a recent military action against Pakistan.

The promo shows host Amitabh Bachchan welcoming Colonel Sofiya Qureshi, Wing Commander Vyomika Singh, and Commander Prerna Deosthalee. The officers spoke proudly about airstrikes carried out in May. According to them, the strikes targeted six sites in Pakistan, including areas in Sialkot and Azad Jammu and Kashmir. The operation was launched in response to a deadly attack in Pahalgam. India blames Pakistan for the attack, but Pakistan denies involvement.

Colonel Qureshi described the operation as necessary. Wing Commander Singh gave details of the attack’s timing. Commander Deosthalee assured that no civilians were harmed. The audience responded with patriotic slogans like “Bharat Mata Ki Jai.”

However, the promo has caused controversy. In Pakistan, many condemned the broadcast, calling it insensitive. The Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) reported that the strikes killed 31 people and injured 57 others. They claimed civilians were among the victims. Pakistan also said it downed 25 Indian drones in response.

KBC also faced backlash within India. Some questioned the decision to feature serving officers on a game show. Others accused the government of using the military for political messaging. Critics said the episode turned KBC into a platform for nationalism rather than knowledge.

Viewers expressed concern over mixing entertainment with military themes. They also pointed out that the timing of the episode—on August 15—seemed politically motivated.

KBC has long been seen as a neutral show focused on education and general knowledge. This latest move has sparked debate over its role in shaping public opinion.

As the show evolves, many wonder if KBC will remain a space for learning—or become one for messaging.
