Commuters in Karachi can expect improved travel after authorities reopened several major sections of University Road, marking significant progress on the city’s long-running road rehabilitation project. The newly opened carriageways are expected to ease traffic congestion and improve connectivity along one of Karachi’s busiest transport corridors.
According to officials, the completed carriageways between Hassan Square and Jail Road have now been opened in both directions. The reopening allows uninterrupted traffic flow through a key section of University Road that had remained under construction for an extended period, causing delays and traffic diversions for thousands of daily commuters.
Authorities have also reopened the road linking Jail Road with Mazar-e-Quaid, providing motorists with another important route through central Karachi. The restoration of this connection is expected to improve traffic movement and reduce pressure on surrounding roads that had been carrying additional traffic during construction.
Officials said the reopening will help reduce congestion across nearby areas and make daily travel more convenient for residents. Traffic disruptions caused by the rehabilitation work had affected commuters, businesses and public transport services for several months.
The Safari Park to NIPA section of the project had already been completed and opened earlier. Construction work is still underway on the remaining stretch between Safora and Mazar-e-Quaid, with authorities aiming to complete the entire corridor as quickly as possible.
The University Road rehabilitation project resumed in April 2026 after the Frontier Works Organization (FWO) took over the long-delayed construction project. The organization was assigned to accelerate work and ensure the completion of one of Karachi’s most important road infrastructure projects.
Earlier this year, Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah and Karachi Mayor Murtaza Wahab visited the project site, where FWO officials briefed them on construction progress. FWO is responsible for completing the section between Islamia College and the Meteorological Department, where work is currently continuing.
Authorities remain optimistic that construction will continue at an accelerated pace, with additional sections expected to open in the coming months. Once completed, the upgraded University Road is expected to improve traffic flow, reduce travel times and provide a better commuting experience for millions of Karachi residents.
