Karachi Mayor Murtaza Wahab has inaugurated the Noor Mohammad Baloch Pumping Station after it remained inactive for 35 years. The restored facility is expected to improve water supply for more than 300,000 residents in Saddar Town, Lyari Town, and nearby areas.
The pumping station was established in 1991 but never became fully operational. The main reason was the absence of a permanent electricity connection. As a result, the project remained unused for decades despite increasing demand for water in several parts of Karachi.
The reopening of the station will help provide a more stable water supply to many neighborhoods. These include Ranchore Line, Kharadar, Mithadar, Jodia Bazaar, Bombay Bazaar, Bhimpura, the Sindh Institute of Urology and Transplantation (SIUT), Civil Hospital, and several union councils in Saddar Town.
Speaking at the inauguration ceremony, the Karachi Mayor said the restoration work began after he personally visited the site. He explained that local representatives and residents had raised complaints about the long-standing condition of the pumping station and ongoing water shortages.
Following the inspection, the city administration decided to complete the project and make the facility operational. Officials believe the restored station will improve water distribution in the surrounding areas and reduce supply problems.
The Karachi Mayor said earlier administrations had repeatedly promised to activate the pumping station but failed to complete the work. He added that the current administration focused on delivering practical results instead of making announcements without implementation.
He also stressed that providing clean drinking water remains a top priority for the Karachi Water and Sewerage Corporation (KWSC). According to the mayor, improving water services is essential for meeting the needs of Karachi’s growing population.
The mayor said KWSC is continuing efforts to strengthen the city’s water supply network. The organization is also working to repair aging infrastructure and improve the performance of existing facilities across Karachi.
City officials believe restoring old infrastructure can support long-term improvements in water management. Upgrading important facilities can help increase efficiency and provide more reliable services to residents.
The administration is also planning additional projects to improve water distribution across different parts of the city. These efforts are aimed at addressing long-standing water challenges through better planning and infrastructure development.
The restoration of the Noor Mohammad Baloch Pumping Station marks an important step in improving Karachi’s public utilities. Thousands of households are expected to benefit from a more dependable water supply after the project became operational.
