Karachi, Pakistan’s largest city, has been ranked as the world’s second riskiest city by Forbes Advisor, just behind Caracas, Venezuela. This ranking is based on a comparison of 60 international cities across seven key metrics: crime, personal safety, health, infrastructure, natural disasters, and digital security.
Forbes Advisor highlights Karachi’s high personal security risk, which encompasses threats from crime, violence, terrorism, natural disasters, and economic instability. The U.S. State Department also ranks Karachi second in terms of travel safety risks and fourth for infrastructure security risk. The department’s travel advisory, published in June 2023, cites ongoing terrorism and violence as major concerns, advising travelers to reconsider visiting the city.
Caracas tops the list of the riskiest cities globally, with the highest health security risk due to inadequate healthcare services and infrastructure, as well as the highest crime risk. Yangon, Myanmar, ranks third on the list, facing significant digital security threats and high personal security risks due to similar issues of crime and instability.
In contrast, the safest cities in the world, according to Forbes Advisor, are:
- Singapore – Recognized for its low natural disaster and health security risks, and the best travel safety rating from the U.S. State Department.
- Tokyo, Japan – Noted for its low health security risk and excellent travel safety rating.
- Toronto, Canada – Ranked as the third safest city globally.
