Recently, Israeli Finance Minister Belazel Smotrich announced the largest illegal seizure of Palestinian land in the West Bank since 1993, coinciding with US Secretary of State Antony Blinken’s visit to Tel Aviv.
This seizure, the largest since the 1993 Accords, has drawn condemnation globally. Despite being illegal under international law, Jewish settlements in the West Bank are continually expanded by Tel Aviv to assert control over the Palestinian-controlled region.
The UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Turk, stated last week that Israel’s settlement expansions amount to a war crime and jeopardize the possibility of a viable Palestinian state.
Israel seized the West Bank, including annexed east Jerusalem, in the 1967 Arab-Israeli war, and all Israeli settlements in the territory are considered illegal under international law.
