Brazilian football star Neymar has hinted that his international career may have come to an end after Brazil suffered a surprising 2-1 defeat to Norway in the Round of 16 of the FIFA World Cup on Sunday. The result knocked the five-time world champions out of the tournament earlier than expected and left players and fans heartbroken.
The 34-year-old forward began the match on the bench and was introduced in the 67th minute as Brazil searched for a way back into the contest. Neymar managed to score from the penalty spot during stoppage time, but his goal came too late to change the outcome, as Norway held on to secure a memorable victory at New York New Jersey Stadium.
Brazil had an excellent opportunity to take the lead early in the game. The team was awarded a penalty in the 14th minute, but midfielder Bruno Guimaraes failed to convert the chance. Norway goalkeeper Orjan Nyland produced a comfortable save, giving his side a major boost and shifting the momentum of the match.
Following the final whistle, Neymar struggled to hide his emotions. Cameras captured the veteran forward in tears as Brazil’s World Cup campaign ended in disappointment. The defeat marked one of the most painful moments of his international career.
Speaking to Brazilian broadcaster GE TV, Neymar suggested that this could be his final appearance in the famous yellow jersey. Reflecting on his journey, he said, “I tried, I tried… Now it’s over! I started here, I finished here,” referring to the same stadium where he made his senior debut for Brazil against the United States in 2010.
If Neymar officially announces his retirement from international football, he will leave behind an outstanding record. During his career with Brazil, he scored 80 goals and provided 58 assists in 130 appearances, making him one of the country’s greatest players.
Although Neymar enjoyed remarkable individual success and became one of Brazil’s most influential footballers, his only major senior international title was the 2013 FIFA Confederations Cup. His possible departure would mark the end of an unforgettable era for Brazilian football.
