Tensions between the United States and Iran have entered a more dangerous stage after both countries carried out fresh military strikes, raising concerns about a wider conflict in the Middle East.
Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) said it fired ballistic missiles and drones at two key US military sites. The targets included Ali Al Salem Air Base in Kuwait and the headquarters of the US Fifth Fleet at Port Salman in Manama, Bahrain. Tehran described the attacks as retaliation for recent US airstrikes on five Iranian coastal areas.
The escalation followed a second consecutive day of US military action. US Central Command (CENTCOM) said American fighter jets struck several Iranian targets near the Strait of Hormuz. Washington said the operation was launched after a commercial vessel was reportedly hit by drones close to the strategic waterway.
The IRGC warned that any further US military action would receive a strong response. It also claimed that an interim memorandum of understanding with Washington gives Iran a role in managing maritime traffic through the Strait of Hormuz. Tehran warned that ships failing to follow its stated arrangements could face tougher action.
According to Iranian and US statements, the latest American strikes hit areas including Sirik, Bandar-e Lengeh and Qeshm Island. The US military said ten Iranian sites were targeted in response to repeated attacks on commercial shipping in Hormuz.
The situation has caused alarm across the Gulf. Air raid sirens were heard in Bahrain, while Kuwait said its air defence systems intercepted incoming missiles and drones.
Several Gulf countries, including the UAE, Bahrain and Kuwait, condemned Iran’s attacks, calling them violations of sovereignty and threats to regional stability. Bahrain also urged the UN Security Council to hold an emergency meeting.
The Strait of Hormuz has again become the centre of rising tensions. Iran says it will help ensure commercial shipping under the interim agreement, but its latest warnings have increased fears over the safety of one of the world’s most important energy routes.
