PTI founder and former prime minister Imran Khan has been moved back to Adiala Jail after undergoing a medical check-up at Shifa International Hospital, according to reports. Khan was transported from the hospital to the prison under heightened security and was later shifted to his cell.
Khan was taken to Shifa International Hospital from Adiala Jail around midnight. Hospital sources had earlier said that he would undergo a detailed medical assessment by a six-member team of specialist doctors. The medical team was expected to determine whether Khan required admission and further treatment at the hospital.
After completing the medical assessment, Khan was reportedly brought back to Adiala Jail. He was then placed in his cell under security arrangements. The development ended speculation that he could remain at the private hospital for treatment.
Security had been tightened across Islamabad before Khan’s transfer to the hospital. Several roads leading toward Shifa International were closed to traffic, while barriers were placed along key routes. Additional police personnel were also deployed around the medical facility.
Security was reportedly increased from Koral Chowk to Zero Point, while media vehicles were removed from the area around the hospital. Islamabad police chief also reached Shifa International Hospital, adding to reports that preparations for Khan’s transfer were underway.
The development followed a Supreme Court order issued on August 18. A three-member bench had directed authorities to move Khan from Adiala Jail to Shifa International Hospital for medical examination and treatment. The court had ordered that he remain under treatment until the next hearing scheduled for September 16.
Under the Supreme Court’s directions, Khan’s personal physician, Dr Faisal Sultan, and his sister, Dr Uzma Khan, were allowed to remain involved in his medical care and examinations. His family members were also permitted to meet him once a week.
The court had ordered the formation of a medical board comprising relevant specialists. The board was to include a physician, general surgeon, internal medicine specialist, ophthalmologist and cardiologist. Khan or his family was directed to bear the cost of treatment at the private hospital.
The Supreme Court also sought Khan’s complete medical record. A report presented before the court stated that he had undergone 39 medical examinations by different specialists between November 2023 and August 2026.
Khan’s medical treatment has also become part of a legal dispute between the federal government and the judiciary. The government challenged the Supreme Court’s order to shift Khan to a private hospital. It argued that existing laws governing prisoners’ medical treatment should also be considered.
The government also warned that the decision could have wider implications for other prisoners seeking treatment at private hospitals. However, its review petition was reportedly returned by the Supreme Court registrar’s office with objections. The government is expected to address those objections before filing the petition again.
During the proceedings, the Supreme Court also questioned the confidentiality of Khan’s medical reports and the cost of his treatment. His lawyer assured the court that Khan’s family would cover the medical expenses. PTI Secretary-General Salman Akram Raja also assured the court that Khan’s medical reports would not be used for political purposes.
The court further sought information about Khan’s meetings with family members over the past three years and his contact with his sons. With Khan now back at Adiala Jail, his medical condition and treatment arrangements are expected to remain under judicial scrutiny until the next hearing.
