Houthis Threaten Bab el-Mandeb Strait Closure as Iran-US Tensions Escalate

Yemen’s Houthi group has issued a warning about the possible closure of the Bab el-Mandeb Strait. This development has raised concerns about global trade and oil supply routes. The group said the move could happen if the United States continues actions it views as blocking peace efforts.

The Bab el-Mandeb Strait is one of the world’s most important shipping routes. It connects the Red Sea to the Gulf of Aden. This passage is used for the transport of oil and goods between Europe, Asia, and the Middle East. Any disruption in this area could impact global markets.

Houthi officials stated that if the strait is closed, reopening it would not be easy. They warned that no external force would be able to restore normal shipping quickly. This statement has increased fears among international observers and trade experts.

Energy analysts say the Bab el-Mandeb plays a key role in global oil supply chains. Millions of barrels of oil pass through this route every day. A closure could lead to delays, higher shipping costs, and rising fuel prices worldwide. It may also force ships to take longer alternative routes.

At the same time, tensions between Iran and the United States remain high. Iranian Parliament Speaker Baqir Qalibaf said there has been some progress in talks. However, he noted that major differences still exist. He criticized possible US restrictions and called them unwise.

Qalibaf also warned against any forward movement by US naval forces. He said that even small advances could trigger a strong response. He claimed that Iranian forces have previously targeted enemy drones and an American F-35 fighter jet during past conflicts.

Experts believe the situation could become more serious if tensions continue to rise. The risk of disruption in the Bab el-Mandeb Strait remains a key concern for global trade. Governments and markets are closely monitoring developments in the region.

For now, shipping continues as normal. However, the warning has added uncertainty to an already tense geopolitical situation.
