Senior meteorologist Muhammad Aslam on Sunday warned that the ongoing heatwave is expected to intensify across southern Punjab, Sindh, and Balochistan, with temperatures likely to rise by another 3 to 4 degrees Celsius after May 6.
Speaking to a local media outlet, he said the heatwave is already affecting public health, as hospitals are reporting a noticeable increase in patients suffering from heat-related illnesses, including dehydration and heatstroke.
He advised citizens to take precautionary measures during the heatwave, particularly by staying hydrated and avoiding unnecessary outdoor activities between 10 am and 4 pm, when temperatures peak. He also recommended wearing light-colored clothing and covering the head with a cap or cloth to reduce exposure to direct sunlight.
To cope with the extreme heatwave conditions, he urged people to drink plenty of water and natural fluids such as sugarcane juice to maintain hydration levels. Special care should be taken for children, elderly individuals, and those with pre-existing health conditions, as they are more vulnerable during a heatwave.
The expert also highlighted the impact of the heatwave on agriculture, advising farmers to take extra care of their livestock by ensuring proper shade, sufficient water, and protection from extreme temperatures.
Motorists were also urged to remain cautious during the heatwave, avoid traveling during peak hours, carry water, and ensure their vehicles are well-maintained to prevent breakdowns in extreme heat.
He concluded by stressing that following official advisories and safety guidelines is essential to minimize risks during the ongoing heatwave.
