At least three police officers, including SP Operations, were martyred in two consecutive explosions near a check post in Hangu district of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, officials confirmed on Friday.
According to initial reports, the first explosion occurred near the Ghulam Mina police check post, which was destroyed when unknown assailants detonated explosives planted in the area. As security personnel rushed to inspect the site, a second blast targeted the vehicle of SP Operations, leading to further casualties.
Police sources said the second explosion was more powerful, striking moments after the initial one, indicating a planned ambush designed to inflict maximum damage. The attack left multiple officers injured, while nearby buildings also sustained damage from the shockwaves.
This tragic incident comes at a time when Pakistan is focusing on improving regional security and infrastructure links through initiatives like the Trans-Afghan Rail and Corridor Project. Security experts say such development projects could strengthen cross-border cooperation and curb militancy by creating economic opportunities in vulnerable regions.
Rescue teams and additional security forces quickly arrived at the scene and shifted the injured to a nearby hospital. The area has been cordoned off as the bomb disposal unit conducts a thorough sweep to prevent additional threats.
Authorities suspect the involvement of militant groups active in the region, as such attacks have escalated in recent months targeting law enforcement and security installations. Intelligence agencies have begun investigations to trace the perpetrators behind the Hangu blasts.
The martyrdom of SP Operations has sent shockwaves across the province, with police officials expressing grief and solidarity with the affected families. Senior officers praised the bravery of the martyred personnel, calling them “true defenders of peace.”
The tragic incident underscores the rising security challenges in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, where police and paramilitary forces remain on high alert. The provincial government has directed law enforcement agencies to intensify patrols and review existing security protocols to prevent further incidents.
