[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text dp_text_size=”size-4″]Google is currently testing an AI tool that can write articles for journalists by using only a few provided facts, according to the New York Times. The search engine giant has presented this tool to media outlets like the New York Times, the Wall Street Journal, and the Washington Post, touting it as a “journalists’ personal assistant” meant to free up their time for other tasks.

While some executives see potential in the tool as a helpful aid, others believe it underestimates the effort required to create accurate and well-crafted news stories. Google spokesperson Jenn Crider emphasized that AI-enabled tools are intended to assist journalists with options for headlines and writing styles, not to replace their essential role in reporting, creating, and fact-checking.

The specific division within Google responsible for this AI tool, called Genesis, remains unclear. Google already offers features like “Help me write” in Gmail and Google Docs, and a context-sensitive version in Messages called Magic Compose. Some speculate that a Language Learning Model specifically trained on a news organization’s archives could potentially emulate its writing style.

However, there are concerns about the reliability of AI-assisted tools, as they can sometimes produce factually incorrect information. Partnerships like OpenAI’s collaboration with the Associated Press aim to explore the possibilities of generative AI in new products and services. Nevertheless, it may be too early to fully rely on machines for all aspects of journalism.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]
