Foreign direct investment continues to decrease on a month-to-month basis

The decline in foreign direct investment (FDI) in Pakistan has continued despite efforts to reverse the trend. According to recent statistics released by the State Bank, monthly FDI has dropped significantly from $360 million to $170 million over the past four months.

In July 2024, FDI totaled $13.6 million, a notable decrease from $169 million in June 2024. During the same period, $24 million was invested in the stock market. However, foreign private investment saw an increase, rising from $99.5 million annually to $160 million in July 2024.

The primary sources of investment were China, Hong Kong, and the United Kingdom, with most of the FDI directed towards the power sector and oil and gas exploration. Despite the decline in FDI, gross disinvestment showed improvement on a year-on-year basis. Overall, total foreign investment in Pakistan reached $305 million in July 2024.
