Elon Musk Sparks Debate With Comments on Extreme Work Hours at New Government Department

Tesla and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk has stirred controversy by claiming that employees of the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), which he now leads, work 120 hours a week. The comment, made via social media, ignited a storm of reactions, ranging from sharp criticism to staunch defense of Musk’s leadership.

Musk, appointed to head DOGE by US President Donald Trump, referred to working weekends as a “superpower” while criticizing government inefficiency. The department, created to cut waste and streamline government operations, is part of Trump’s push for a leaner, more effective administration. DOGE is expected to roll out major reforms by July 4, 2026, aligning with the 250th anniversary of the US Declaration of Independence.

Social media users had mixed reactions to Musk’s claim. Some slammed his leadership style, calling him a “terrible boss” and questioning the feasibility of 120-hour workweeks. One user joked, “So… DOGE is made up of aliens and robots and Elon! Or, Elon says anything to make himself look better.” Others pointed out that despite the intense work hours, DOGE’s official website remains empty.

However, Musk’s supporters praised the department’s work ethic, viewing it as a “heroic effort” to tackle bureaucratic inefficiency. One fan even compared Musk to Napoleon, praising his “genius intellect” and relentless drive.

Musk’s comments come amid broader debates on labor expectations, following similar remarks from other business leaders like SN Subrahmanyan and Infosys co-founder Narayana Murthy, both of whom have faced backlash for advocating extended workweeks.
