Sukkur Airport Upgrades Underway for International Status: NA Informed
The National Assembly was informed on Wednesday that efforts are in motion to upgrade Sukkur Airport to international standards, with a particular focus on runway improvements.
International Conversion in Progress
During the NA’s question hour, Parliamentary Secretary for Aviation Zeb Jaffar stated that the government is actively working on the development of Sukkur Airport as an international facility. She emphasized that Pakistan International Airlines (PIA), being a state-run carrier, must operate in accordance with global aviation market dynamics, factoring in foreign exchange fluctuations and operational costs to ensure sustainability.

Airfare Concerns Addressed
Responding to MNA Haji Jamal Kakakhel, Zeb Jaffar acknowledged complaints about high airfare from Quetta and assured the house that these would be reviewed. She also responded to a supplementary question by MNA Alia Kamran, noting that airfares tend to rise during Eid and festive periods due to increased demand across the transport sector.
PIA Returns to Profitability
Jaffar highlighted that PIA has returned to profitability, recently earning over Rs 26 billion. She said further measures are being taken to boost the airline’s performance.
Regarding areas where PIA does not operate, Zartaj Gul raised concerns about air travel accessibility. Jaffar explained that in such regions, private airlines have been granted licenses to fill the service gap.
Fleet and Fare Policies
Jaffar clarified that PIA does not provide free air travel, except for concessional fares for employees’ families.
She reiterated that Sukkur Airport’s transformation remains a government priority, and the runway upgrade work is already underway.
As for PIA’s current fleet, it comprises:
- 6 Boeing 777s
- 11 Airbus A320s
- Remaining aircraft are ATRs
These developments are part of broader efforts to modernize Pakistan’s aviation infrastructure and expand regional connectivity through international gateways.
