Archaeologists in Egypt unveiled the first of 59 sealed sarcophagi discovered earlier that year in Saqqara, a massive ancient burial place in Egypt that functioned as the necropolis of the ancient city of Memphis, in late 2020 in front of a live audience.
According to Egypt’s Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities, 59 wooden coffins were unearthed inside burial wells in the archaeological region of Saqqara. The wooden coffins were in good shape and held the bodies of Egyptian priests, prominent members of the community, and other elderly males.

The mummy of a deceased priest was wrapped with a “ornate burial cloth” designed to imitate the deceased’s face in the first wooden tomb.
Many questioned whether opening the sealed mummies in 2020 was a smart idea, as some think that opening tombs or coffins brings ill luck.
