The United States has approved a major $11.1 billion arms package for Taiwan, marking one of the largest defence deals between Washington and Taipei. The decision comes at a time of heightened regional tensions and reflects ongoing US commitments under long-standing security arrangements aimed at supporting Taiwan’s self-defence capabilities.
According to official statements, the arms package includes a wide range of advanced military equipment designed to strengthen Taiwan’s defensive posture. The proposed sale covers missile systems, artillery, drones, and related support equipment intended to enhance readiness, mobility, and deterrence against potential external threats in the region.
US officials said the package aligns with existing policy frameworks that allow the provision of defensive weapons to Taiwan. They stressed that the deal is meant to help maintain peace and stability in the Asia-Pacific, rather than alter the regional balance or encourage confrontation with any specific country.
Taiwan’s government welcomed the approval, describing it as a significant step in boosting national security. Officials in Taipei said the weapons package would support ongoing military modernisation efforts and improve the island’s ability to respond effectively to evolving security challenges and increased military pressure.
China has consistently opposed US arms sales to Taiwan, arguing they interfere in its internal affairs and undermine regional stability. Previous deals have prompted diplomatic protests and warnings from Beijing, and this latest approval is expected to further strain already tense US-China relations.
Analysts say the arms package highlights Washington’s strategic approach in the region, combining military support with diplomatic caution. While the sale still requires procedural steps before finalisation, it signals continued US backing for Taiwan’s defence, even as broader geopolitical competition intensifies across the Asia-Pacific.
