New York Bans DeepSeek AI on Government Devices

New York has banned the use of DeepSeek’s AI app on government devices over concerns about data security and foreign influence, echoing earlier actions against Chinese-owned apps like TikTok. Governor Kathy Hochul emphasized the need to protect state data, prevent cyber threats, and guard against state-sponsored censorship.

DeepSeek, a Chinese-owned AI company, gained global attention this year with its R-1 chatbot, praised for technical query handling and its free accessibility. However, its rapid growth has raised fears of surveillance, data collection, and potential censorship by the Chinese government, with some users already reporting restricted content critical of China. Concerns also extend to technology theft and U.S. national security.

Other states, including Texas, have imposed similar restrictions on Chinese AI and social media apps, while Congress is considering federal legislation to block DeepSeek on government systems. Lawmakers are also exploring broader measures to restrict AI technology imports from China, reflecting rising scrutiny similar to the TikTok case, which faces federal device bans and a potential nationwide prohibition.

As DeepSeek gains popularity among general users, its U.S. future remains uncertain, with authorities balancing innovation and security risks.
