Malaysia Plans Social Media Ban for Under‑16s

Malaysia is considering a ban on social media accounts for children aged 16 and below starting in 2026.
The move aims to protect young users from cyberbullying, online scams, and inappropriate content.

The government may require platforms to verify users’ ages using MyKad, passports, or MyDigital ID.
This is part of the upcoming Online Safety Act, set to take effect from January 1, 2026.

Authorities also encouraged parents to limit gadget use and promote outdoor activities for children.
Officials said the ban is a precautionary step to ensure online safety and mental well-being of minors.
