The Indian Tejas fighter jet crashed during an intense aerial display at the Dubai Airshow on Friday, around 2:10 p.m. local time. The locally made light combat aircraft by Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd was performing a routine demonstration when it suddenly spiraled out of control. According to the Associated Press, it is still unclear whether the pilot managed to eject before the aircraft hit the ground.
Spectators, including families and aviation fans, were stunned as thick black smoke rose from the crash site near Al Maktoum International Airport. One witness said the jet had just completed a low roll — a risky move meant to show off its agility — before losing stability and exploding roughly 1.6 kilometers from the main venue.
The incident disrupted the Dubai Airshow, one of the largest aviation exhibitions in the world, held from November 17–21 with more than 1,500 exhibitors, 200 aircraft displays, and hundreds of industry leaders. Emergency teams quickly responded while viewers tried to comprehend the shocking sight of the fighter jet going down. The pilot’s condition is still unknown.
