India Signs U.S. Gas Deal Under Trump Pressure

India has finalized a deal to import 2.2 million tonnes per year of U.S. liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), covering nearly 10% of its annual LPG imports.

The agreement is described as India’s first structured U.S. LPG supply contract, aiming to diversify energy sources and ensure secure, affordable supplies.

U.S. President Donald Trump reportedly pressured India to increase energy purchases, seeking to reduce the trade imbalance between the two nations.

India is also considering removing import taxes on U.S. LNG to make American gas more competitive and boost long-term energy cooperation.

State-run gas utility GAIL is exploring long-term contracts and potential equity stakes in U.S. LNG plants as part of the broader strategy.

The deal is expected to strengthen energy ties between India and the U.S., while also supporting India’s domestic energy security and supply diversification.
