Karachi Customs Confiscates 20,000 Kg Chinese Salt Misdeclared As Citric Acid

Karachi Customs has foiled a major smuggling attempt, seizing 20,000 kg of Chinese salt misdeclared as citric acid. The consignment is valued at Rs. 20.5 million. The operation took place at A-One Godown, Walika Chowrangi.

Acting on credible intelligence, the Anti-Smuggling Organization (ASO) conducted a raid at Shed No. 9 of M/s United Traders. Bags labeled as citric acid were recovered. Initial checks revealed that many bags contained Chinese salt, identified by its distinct smell and taste, while some bags had genuine citric acid.

The custodian presented GD No. GWRI-HC-1444-10-11-2025, declaring the entire shipment as citric acid imported from Iran. A detailed inspection confirmed the misdeclaration. Authorities recovered 800 bags of Chinese salt, each weighing 25 kg, and 100 bags of genuine citric acid.

The seized goods have been shifted to a Karachi Customs warehouse. Samples have been sent for laboratory analysis. Legal proceedings have been initiated under the Customs Act, 1969.

Officials said this operation reflects Karachi Customs’ strong resolve to prevent smuggling. The department aims to protect Pakistan’s economy by stopping illegal trade and ensuring compliance with customs regulations.

The operation also highlights the importance of strict monitoring at warehouses and ports. Karachi Customs emphasized that smuggling harms local businesses and reduces national revenue. Authorities confirmed that similar targeted operations will continue to prevent illegal trade.

The Anti-Smuggling Organization, in coordination with Karachi Customs, remains vigilant in tracking suspicious consignments. The seizure sends a clear message to importers to declare goods accurately and comply with customs laws.
