27th Constitutional Amendment Heads to National Assembly after Senate Approval

After securing approval in the Senate, the 27th Amendment Bill will now be presented in the National Assembly today (Tuesday) for a decisive vote. The lower house convenes at 11am, with the amendment listed as the key agenda item. Law Minister Azam Nazeer Tarar will move the bill forward, where a heated debate between government and opposition lawmakers is anticipated due to the bill’s controversial provisions.

Political observers expect intense exchanges amid the ongoing divide seen in the Senate. The session will also include two education reform bills: the King Hamad University of Nursing and Associated Medical Services Bill, 2025, and the Danish Schools Authority Bill, 2025, to be introduced by Education Minister Khalid Maqbool Siddiqui.

The 27th Amendment seeks major shifts within Pakistan’s power structure. It proposes replacing the CJCSC with a new Chief of Defence Forces, increasing civilian authority over top military appointments. It also introduces a Constitutional Court, changes to judicial transfers, and significant alterations to the NFC Award — a move critics believe could impact provincial autonomy.

Opposition parties have strongly protested the bill, claiming it undermines judiciary powers and disrupts the current constitutional balance. With the required two-thirds majority already achieved in the Senate, the National Assembly vote will determine the bill’s future.
