Lahore Approves Pakistan’s Largest Wastewater Treatment Project

Authorities have given the green light to Pakistan’s largest wastewater treatment project, designed to purify sewage and restore the Ravi River’s ecosystem.

The Babu Sabu Wastewater Treatment Plant, approved by the Central Development Working Party (CDWP), aims to clean and recycle sewage before safely releasing it into the river, a Housing Department spokesperson said.

The plant will be built on 836 acres of land acquired in 1992-93 and will cost around Rs52 billion.

In its first phase, the project will treat wastewater from Multan Road, Gulshan Ravi, and nearby areas with assistance from France’s AFD donor agency. This phase will process 88 million gallons per day, while the plant’s total capacity will eventually reach 198 million gallons daily.

Expected to be completed within 4.5 years, the project is part of a larger initiative to establish six wastewater treatment plants across Lahore to ensure all sewage is treated before being discharged.
