Pakistan National Shipping Corporation Greenlights $193M Oil Tanker Acquisition

The Pakistan National Shipping Corporation (PNSC) has approved the acquisition of three new oil tankers worth $193 million. This move is part of a broader plan to strengthen the country’s maritime fleet and expand shipping capacity.

According to the Ministry of Maritime Affairs, the decision aligns with government directives to increase the total number of national vessels to 30 by 2026. The purchase aims to enhance Pakistan’s shipping operations and reduce reliance on foreign carriers.

The three tankers approved for purchase include MT Lorex (to be renamed MT Karachi) for $74.5 million, MT Nafsika (to be renamed MT Lahore) for $74.5 million, and MT Stavanger Poseidon (to be renamed MT Quetta) for $44.15 million. The first two are Aframax-class tankers, while the third is an MR-2 class vessel. Delivery of the vessels is expected by December 2025.

During a briefing, PNSC management informed Federal Minister for Maritime Affairs Muhammad Junaid Anwar Chaudhry that the fleet expansion plan is on track. Legal and commercial arrangements for the new ships are being finalized, while procurement processes for 12 additional vessels are underway. These include four LR-2, four MR-2, and four MR-1 class ships.

Minister Chaudhry emphasized that expanding the National Shipping Corporation’s fleet would strengthen Pakistan’s maritime logistics. The initiative is expected to save foreign exchange, reduce freight payments to foreign carriers, and improve energy transportation efficiency.

In recent years, PNSC has increased its fleet from 10 to 12 vessels, including two Aframax-class tankers, Swan Lake and P Aliki. These vessels are suitable for ports that larger carriers cannot access, enhancing operational flexibility.

The National Shipping Corporation’s fleet expansion represents a significant step toward improving Pakistan’s maritime independence. Officials say the investment will support economic growth, national energy security, and efficient cargo transportation.

The government’s focus on fleet enhancement reflects its commitment to a strong and self-reliant maritime sector.
