US To Assist Ukraine In Targeting Russia’s Energy Sites For First Time

The United States has announced it will provide Ukraine with intelligence to target Russian energy sites. This marks the first time Washington is allowing direct strikes on Russia’s oil refineries and power facilities.

US officials told the Wall Street Journal that the intelligence will help Ukraine hit key energy sites, including pipelines, refineries, and power plants. The goal is to reduce Russia’s oil and gas revenue, which funds its military operations.

While the US has shared intelligence with Ukraine throughout the conflict, this step signals a major shift in support. Officials are also encouraging NATO allies to provide similar information to boost Ukraine’s long-range strike capabilities.

In addition to intelligence support, Ukraine has requested Tomahawk cruise missiles. These missiles have a range of 2,500 kilometers, which would allow strikes deep inside Russia. Ukraine is also developing its own long-range missile, the Flamingo, though production levels remain uncertain.

President Donald Trump has urged European countries to stop importing Russian oil. He has also considered tariffs on India to reduce discounted Russian crude imports. Trump suggested that Ukraine, with European support, could reclaim all territories currently occupied by Russia.

The Kremlin, however, maintains that countries such as Turkey have the right to continue trade with Russia if it suits their interests. Meanwhile, G7 finance ministers have pledged stricter measures against buyers of Russian oil and those helping Moscow evade sanctions.

Experts say targeting energy sites could significantly weaken Russia’s economic base. However, they also warn that such actions carry risks of escalation.

This development highlights a growing international effort to pressure Russia economically while strengthening Ukraine’s defense capabilities. The focus on energy sites underscores their strategic importance in the ongoing conflict.
