Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu formally apologized to Qatar during his U.S. visit for the strike in Doha that targeted Hamas leaders.
Reports indicate the apology was part of a broader effort to pressure Hamas into accepting the Trump administration’s 21-point peace plan.
Netanyahu acknowledged that the Doha strike violated Qatar’s sovereignty but did not express regret over targeting Hamas itself. He conveyed the apology in a phone call to Qatar’s Prime Minister from the White House.
The attack in Doha killed a Qatari security guard, and Netanyahu offered condolences for the death. In a recent interview, he emphasized that Israel’s only target was Hamas and expressed hope for mutual understanding on the incident.
This is the first publicly reported direct contact between Israel and Qatar’s leaders, although secret discussions have occurred previously.
Ahead of Netanyahu’s U.S. visit, President Trump also spoke with Qatar’s Emir about reinstating Qatar’s role in mediating a Gaza ceasefire.
