The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has confirmed that it will raise the Asia Cup 2025 trophy controversy at the International Cricket Council (ICC) meeting in November. The issue emerged after the Indian team refused to accept the trophy from Asian Cricket Council (ACC) Chairperson Mohsin Naqvi.
BCCI Secretary Devajit Saikia announced that the matter will be formally discussed in Dubai. He said the board will strongly protest the way Naqvi handled the presentation ceremony. According to him, the refusal was in line with government policy.
“This Asia Cup was a multinational event. We don’t play bilateral series. While the Indian team is proud of defeating Pakistan, it was decided in advance that the trophy would not be received from ACC Chairman Mohsin Naqvi, who is a senior political leader in Pakistan,” Saikia said.
After the refusal, the trophy was removed from the stage, leaving the ceremony incomplete. Although India won the tournament, the players stood by their decision. Naqvi distributed medals to the runner-up team but did not hand the trophy to India. Instead, he carried both the trophy and medals away, which shocked Indian officials.
Saikia expressed disappointment. “He took the trophy and medals with him, which was unexpected and unacceptable,” he said. The BCCI has demanded that the items be returned at the earliest.
Despite the incomplete presentation, the BCCI announced a reward for the players. Saikia revealed a cash prize of ₹21 crore for the squad in recognition of their victory against Pakistan.
The upcoming ICC meeting is expected to feature a strong protest from the Indian board. The BCCI remains firm in its stance that the handling of the Asia Cup 2025 trophy was inappropriate and needs to be addressed.
