Punjab To Formulate Water Supply And Sewerage Master Plan For 14 Districts

The Punjab government has decided to prepare a detailed Sewerage Master Plan for 14 districts. The project aims to modernize water supply systems and upgrade sewerage networks across the province.

The decision came after instructions from Housing Secretary Noorul Amin Mengal. A formal letter was sent to the Project Director of Local Government, assigning Managing Directors of WASA agencies in the respective districts as focal persons.

According to the letter, the Sewerage Master Plan will include a full review of existing water supply schemes, sewerage systems, and stormwater drains. It will also focus on future urban planning needs and incorporate strategies to address climate impacts.

Officials confirmed that the plan will introduce a modern planning framework along with a phased financial strategy. Capacity building for WASA agencies and institutional reforms will be central to the initiative. The Housing Department highlighted that newly established WASA bodies are gradually improving in both planning and execution of development projects.

The 14 districts included in the Sewerage Master Plan are Dera Ghazi Khan, Sargodha, Bahawalpur, Sahiwal, Sialkot, Hafizabad, Jhelum, Rahim Yar Khan, Jhang, Okara, Gujrat, Sheikhupura, Murree, and Nankana Sahib.

Authorities believe the project will strengthen water and sewerage infrastructure while ensuring long-term sustainability. By addressing climate challenges and adopting modern frameworks, the government hopes to improve urban resilience.

Officials also stressed that the plan will enhance public health, reduce environmental risks, and provide better service delivery for urban populations. With improved coordination among WASA agencies, the government expects faster and more efficient implementation.

The Sewerage Master Plan is expected to act as a roadmap for sustainable development, benefiting millions of residents across Punjab and improving overall living standards.
