Singer Adnan Sami has spoken out in support of Diljit Dosanjh amid the ongoing debate over the film Sardaar Ji 3. Sami emphasized that while art transcends borders, an artist’s identity remains tied to their country.
The controversy began after Dosanjh was labeled “anti-national” following the ban of his film in India. Sardaar Ji 3 features Pakistani actress Hania Aamir and was barred from release after the Pahalgam terrorist attack.
In a recent interview, Adnan Sami, who became an Indian citizen in 2016, stated:
“Politics is something else, and nationality is something else. An artist always belongs to his country; he cannot be political.”
He added that art should not be forced into political narratives. Artists do not always follow strict political ideologies, he explained, and their work should be judged separately from politics.
Diljit Dosanjh also addressed fans at a concert in Malaysia. He said the film was shot before the attack and questioned why India-Pakistan cricket matches continued despite tensions. “The film was shot before the attack, and now the match was played after the attack. We are with our country and against terrorism,” he said.
Dosanjh rejected accusations of being “anti-national” and highlighted the patriotism of the Punjabi and Sikh community. “Every effort was made to portray me as an anti-national, but this is not the truth. Our community has always been loyal and patriotic,” he said.
Despite the ban in India, Sardaar Ji 3 has performed well internationally. The Punjabi diaspora has shown strong support for the film. However, the casting of Pakistani actress Hania Aamir sparked criticism amid political sensitivities.
Adnan Sami’s comments underline the importance of separating art from politics. His support reinforces the idea that artists should not be judged solely on political considerations.
