Hyderabad Reports New Polio Case, Pakistan’s Total Reaches 27

Authorities confirmed a new polio case on Monday in Hyderabad, Sindh, bringing Pakistan’s total cases this year to 27.

According to the Regional Reference Laboratory for Polio Eradication at Islamabad’s National Institute of Health, the latest case involves an eight-month-old girl. Sindh has now recorded seven cases in 2025, while Khyber Pakhtunkhwa remains the hardest-hit province with 18 cases. Punjab and Gilgit-Baltistan have each reported one case.

The announcement comes ahead of a nationwide anti-polio campaign scheduled for October 13–19, which aims to vaccinate approximately 45.4 million children under five, supported by over 400,000 workers. Earlier this month, a sub-national drive covering 88 districts, including Hyderabad, reached around 21 million children.

Polio remains a highly contagious and incurable disease, with repeated doses of the Oral Polio Vaccine (OPV) providing the only effective protection.
