Andy Pycroft Finally Comments On His Role In Handshake-Gate Scandal

Andy Pycroft, the ICC match referee at the center of the “Handshake-Gate” controversy, has finally addressed the incident during the 2025 Asia Cup.

The Zimbabwean official became involved in the dispute after allegedly preventing Pakistan’s Salman Ali Agha from shaking hands with India’s Suryakumar Yadav. Reports suggested that Pycroft acted on instructions from the Indian cricket board and government. He later clarified that he was merely passing on the message to Pakistan’s captain, believing he was acting only as a messenger.

The incident sparked strong criticism from the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB). The board accused Andy Pycroft of mishandling the situation and failing to consult the ICC, claiming that his actions violated the “spirit of cricket” and standard protocol.

Pycroft explained that he was informed of the directive just minutes before the toss and had no time to contact the ICC for guidance. The ICC later reviewed the complaint and stated that Andy Pycroft acted professionally and within his authority as a match referee.

Tensions escalated when Pakistan threatened to withdraw from their next match against the UAE if Pycroft continued officiating. The team delayed pre-match preparations, leading to an emergency meeting between PCB officials, ICC representatives, and the Emirates Cricket Board.

The situation was temporarily resolved after Andy Pycroft met with Salman Ali Agha, coach Mike Hesson, and team manager Naved Akram Cheema. Pycroft expressed regret over the misunderstanding and emphasized that he had no intention of disrespecting the players or the game.

The controversy underscores the challenges cricket authorities face when political issues intersect with sport. The India-Pakistan rivalry added further tension to the situation.

While the immediate dispute has been managed, both teams are scheduled to face off again in the Super Four stage of the Asia Cup 2025. The effects of “Handshake-Gate” are likely to remain a talking point throughout the tournament.
